A day at the spa is designed to be a luxurious, nurturing, relaxing experience when you choose facial, massage or medical enhancements. After all, you are paying to be pampered by experts and get results from professionals. Yet many people inadvertently sabotage their own experience because they are unsure what to do. Here are 5 simple tips for making the most of your spa day.
Some people rush in the door of the spa just before their treatment begins and still on the phone. They are wearing expensive jewelry and carrying a large purse or briefcase. They count down the minutes during their treatment, rush out of the spa in a frenzy, and then wonder why they don’t feel any more relaxed.
Spa therapists are highly skilled at helping people relax, but it is important to meet them halfway. Think of your spa visit as a well-earned reward, and go out of your way to make space for it in both your schedule and your head space. Carve out plenty of time. Arrange for a babysitter. Leave your cell phone at home, or at least turn it off when you arrive.
Arrive at least 10 minutes before your appointment and spend a few minutes meditating, doing breath work, or just relaxing before your treatment begins.
Your spa staff is genuinely committed to giving you an excellent experience. Don’t feel shy about expressing your preferences for everything from the volume of background music to the temperature of the room. Also speak up during facial or massage if needed. You might want your massage therapist to adjust the amount of pressure that is being used or you might ask a question about a particular technique.
It is usually best, though, to remain quiet during your treatment except when you have a question or concern. Use your own discretion, and chat if you like, but never feel obligated to fill the silence in the room. Falling asleep is perfectly acceptable.
It is normal to feel a bit shy or hesitant, especially if it is your first trip to the spa. Yet the best thing you can do for yourself is to let go and allow yourself to sink into your treatment. If you are nervous, tell both the receptionist and your therapist. Ask for instructions on everything from how to wear your facial gown to whether to lay on the table face up or face down.
If you are unsure what a particular treatment entails, ask your esthetician or massage therapist for a description of your service.
There is no need to rush out the door as soon as your treatment is over. While you will need to leave the treatment room after collecting yourself for a few moments, you are welcome to stay with a glass of fruit water or tea and relax for as long as you like. Many treatments can leave you feeling emotional, light headed, or unsteady, so take the time that you need to get ready to return to the real world.
